Jeremy “J.Mc” McMurtry

Jeremy McMurtry was born in Portland, Ore. in 1979. He started drawing at a very young age but what made him different from other young artists is that he was born colorblind. Rather than let that hinder his artistic passion, he has learned to embrace it. McMurtry relocated to Arizona in 1998 to attend Collins College where he received an Associates degree in Occupational Studies of Animation.

McMurtry started his career in design working on corporate logos and illustrations. From there he became artist assistant with the renowned Phoenix Artists Guild (PAG). Inspired by working with some of Arizona’s most talented artists, McMurtry left PAG to focus on his own work using mixed media techniques.

McMutry’s has coined his signature technique as retro abstract collage art. Using original clippings from women from vintage 1940s, 50 and 60s magazines and pictures of microphones, McMurtry paints abstract backgrounds and uses different materials and mediums to bring his work to life. Most of his pieces feature music and voice because he feels these things are very powerful in influencing human emotion. He believes the power of voice can move mountains or tear them down. Music, on the other hand, can sooth the soul and take you to a beautiful place in her heart and mind.

Like many artists, McMurtry dares to explore all facets of art, from animation to painting to poetry. He will always push his own boundaries in art and life.

McMurtry’s Lounge Act series of paintings can now be viewed and purchased at jam in Scottsdale located at 6938 E. 1st Street, Scottsdale 85251, just west of Goldwater Boulevard
